Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages down to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of British forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were part of thousands of British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the US military carried out what it described as a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
