Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
