Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the ability to question particular decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
